Acoustics

Sound transmission through windows is governed by the same physical principles that affect walls, but practical noise control measures are influenced by the properties of glass and the characteristics of window assemblies. Increasing the glass thickness, for example, gives greater noise reduction at most frequencies, but the stiffness of glass limits the improvement. Using multiple layers (double glazing) increases noise reduction at most frequencies, but this is dependent on the separation of the layers.
When considering glazing options for noise reduction, several basic principles apply:

Single Glazing

The thicker the glass, the better the reduction in low frequency noise such as traffic noise.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass will perform slightly better than a similar thickness single glass, due to the dampening effect of the PVB interlayer. Laminated Glass using disimilar thicknesses of glass also improves the "Muffling" effect against noise.

Double Glazing

In cases where substantial noise reduction is required, double glazing is the most sensible choice.

Insulating glass units (double glazing) have some effect on noise reduction. While variations in air gap widths of 6mm to 16mm effect minimal change, a variation in the thickness of the two glasses used (at least 50% i.e. 4mm and 6mm) will have a marked effect.

As a standard Shugg Glass & Windows use a double glazing configuration of 6.38mm Laminate Safety Glass, 6mm Air Space & 4mm Clear Toughened Safety Glass.

Normally the human ear cannot detect a 1-2dB change. A 10dB increase is about half the original sound. A 10dB decrease is about twice the original sound.

Typical Sounds

  • 50dB average conversation.
  • 70dB average street noise.
  • 90dB noisy factory.

Weather Seal - Lapseal

In addition to the option of double glazing, the Shugg Window comes standard with a weather strip (Lapseal) which also aides in noise reduction.
